On a bolete, probably a Tylopilus. T. rubrobrunneus was in the area so maybe it is young Hypomyces melanocarpus?

Since it is actually distending the fruit body I agree with you here, as my experience has been this as well. In ‘Biodiversity of Fungi’ Mueller:Bills:Foster, it states that this Hypomyces occurs on the bitter Tylopilus species, so maybe it doesnt necessarily need to be tied to T. rubrobrunneus.
