Found this growing amongst the leaf litter on the side of a trail. Its bright orange color is completely unedited. The area just had several weeks of moderate to heavy rain most days. I’ve searched but I can’t find a close enough match.

Any ideas as to what the proper name is?

Thanks Steve! I’m nowhere near qualified to make a guess at which group these belong to, but I too didn’t see the darkened tip as an identifiable marker for the group that was suggested initially. It’s a beautiful specimen though! I’ve never seen one as colorful.

Cool mushroom huh.

I disagree that these with just a slightly darkened cap tip have any real resemblance to olivacea “group”. They are way closer to H. marginata. ………Hesler and Smith show H. marginatus var marginatus in Maryland but for var olivaceus they show only Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan and Washington State. Since “type” is from Washington State – we must start there. I have one sequenced and entered in GenBank and so far it does not match closely with any of the marginata group from Washington State. They do not look the same.
