Notes:
Resembles bicolor but stipe is punctate rather than streaked with reddish tones.

Mixed oak, birch, hemlock, red maple forest. Cap reddish brown with purple tones, 5-11 cm. Pores yellow, slowly bruise bluish gray then gradually fade to pale brown. Stipe yellow ground color, covered with dark purplish red punctae at base, gradually thinning out toward the yellow apex, bruises blue. 7-11 cm long x 1-2 cm thick, curved toward the base. Slight whitish stem reticulation at the apex only. Cap flesh pale yellow, bruised red at insect holes, slowly turned bluish in spots. Stem flesh a darker yellow, otherwise bruising as the cap. KOH pale orange on flesh, amber/orange on cap. Ammonia pale blue on cap flesh, negative on stem flesh, dark yellowish green on cap. Iron salts blue-gray on flesh, greenish on cap. Spores subfusiform, smooth, 9-11 × 3.5-4.
