Observation 33111: Pluteus Fr.

When: 2010-02-03

Collection location: San Mateo, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Tom (LanLord)

No specimen available

Notes:
I’m not sure what to do with this one.

It was growing in grass near wood chips, they were medium to large (4 to 10 inches across) with a pronounced umbo. The gills were pinkish and not attached to the stip.

I thought volvariella when I first saw them, the pink gills made me nearly certain, but I couldn’t find a single specimen with a volva, no matter how closely I looked, dug or carefully extracted the stem.

I thought lepiota, but the pinkish gills make me doubtful.
