Recognized by sight: its eventual ID was not obvious at all before I cracked the bulbous cap. with a greenish cast to the gray top, green earth tongue was one of the names thrown out! this is a craterellus that closed up shop in its upper story…but texture and odor and insides all fit with the more normally trumpet shaped fungus.
when you have billions of these things in the field you’re gonna get some oddballs!
