Notes:
Very tough to remove from tree and a substantial amount of woodpeckers around. Well off the beaten path. A snowy morning in the wilderness.

I do not know what kind of tree this is unfortunately. I know that is isn’t a Birch. Thank you for the suggestion. I’m new to the game so will be sure about the tree in the future.

What kind of tree is this?

Phellinus spp. are host specific. P. tremulae occurs only on aspen: http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/feb2004.html This looks more like Fomes fomentarius which occurs on beech and birch and possibly other hardwoods.
