Notes:
A few small patches of growth among other types of lichen on fallen tree. Black unbranched cilia from lobe margins. Lower surface white and smooth (not webby). Soredia primarily towards lobe tips on underside/margins. No apothecia observed. Cortex K+yellow, C-, medulla K+yellow. Update: repeated test results: medulla K-

I usually hunt through MO observations looking for it:) Thanks J-Dar for sharing it. Only place where I learn relevant and practical info (and anybody else who elaborates). The NaOh must have leeched the marker from the cortex into the medulla that resulted in my false positive and some of those cilia were actually rhizines….tricky.

Yes, the cilia are a good character for Heterodermia… and Physcia adscendens! Note the conspicuous white mottling on your specimen. Heterodermia never does that, at least not in North America. But P. adscendens usually does.

Of course, P. adscendens is supposed to have “hoods” at the tips, and yours has labriform soralia (lobe tips curled up revealing soredia under tips, as opposed to soralia underneat / within hood like swellings at the tips). But the lobes aren’t really long and narrow enough to be typical P. tenella. Thus my quandary.

I remember really being confused by this group in the San Gabriels. Next time you see a good population (it was abundant on oaks at 5000’ or so on Mount Wilson, for example), take a close critical look at the range of variation present. Tell me what you think. :)
