It does have a pinkish stipe and I do not recall a smell of coconut which Funga Nordica states R. fragilis has, so Irene is definitely closer with her ID possibility but as Dimitar states there are several possibilities. Darn those Russulas!

R. fragilis — not with a colored stem.

Hey Walt,

one of the basics about R. fragilis is that the stipe is supposed to be white, not tinged in any other color. Otherwise there are bunch of other species that look similar, including the one Irene suggested. It was acrid, I’m sure.
