Observation 34612: Lichen P. Micheli

When: 2010-03-07

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

This lichen was growing from wood out of a hole in the snow in Zone 12. The hole suggests that the lichen is a heat source, indicating some level of metabolic activity even now at this time of the year.

Lichens have been documented to photosynthesize down to -17°C in Antarctica(!) But do also remember that compared to snow (a very efficient radiator) even this whitish lichen is “dark”. Perhaps a combination of the two effects?
