This lichen was growing from wood out of a hole in the snow in Zone 12. The hole suggests that the lichen is a heat source, indicating some level of metabolic activity even now at this time of the year.

Frozen lichens

Lichens have been documented to photosynthesize down to -17°C in Antarctica(!) But do also remember that compared to snow (a very efficient radiator) even this whitish lichen is “dark”. Perhaps a combination of the two effects?
