Observation 35214: Xerocomellus dryophilus (Thiers) N. Siegel, C.F. Schwarz & J.L. Frank

When: 2010-03-31

Collection location: Point Reyes National Seashore, Marin Co., California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Ron Pastorino (Ronpast)

No specimen available

This could be an older specimen of Xercomus dryophilus. It was growing under a dying Live oak surrounded by Bishop pines.
There was some slight reddening of the flesh under the cuticle but the overall bluing of the flesh was not really evident in this mature specimen.
However, the spore size of approx. 12.0-13.9 X 6.0-7.0 microns more closely matches X. dryophilus than X. chrysenteron.
Also, the pinched stem with the dark red base is more indicative of the X. dryophilus.
