Short answer is that there are multiple species hiding within both Physcia biziana and P. aipolia. And don’t forget P. albinea — very similar to P. biziana, but the “pruina” is actually formed by the breakdown of the upper cortex.

Yes, P. biziana does tend to be flatter and broader. Actually, that was part of why I thought this specimen should be P. biziana! Other differences, include biziana being much more pruinose, aipolia being maculate, and aipolia having atranorin in the medulla (biziana is K+y on top, but K- inside; aipolia is K+y both on top and inside). This latter test is tricky to do without a dissecting microscope, though. One must be careful to apply KOH only to the white medulla, or the K+y from the cortex will bleed into the medulla and give a false positive in P. biziana.

Almaty kinds are much flattened and have wide lobbies. Karaganda kinds are thick and bumpy and more pruinose (as thick badges)

This just seems too pruinose for P. aipolia.
