If (as in this case) it is corticate below. There is a gestalt difference. Heterodermia look more “flowing” to my eye if that makes any sense. The upper cortex has elongate hyphae running parallel to the surface. Physcia has round cells packed together, giving it a duller, more “static” appearance.
