I have large hands. I can palm a basketball.

Could you enclose the volval sac in your hand?

Some Italian field guides have a picture of a large gray species with a very large volval sack to which they apply the name (Amanita magnivolvata) of a species described from Finland and known from Norway.

The sack seems to me to be laarger than that shown in this image; also, at least sometimes, magnivolvata has a chestnut brown tint on the cap in the central region. The dried specimens that I have examined are much larger than those of the majority of species of section Vaginatae. This is why I am asking about size.

That might help give a size perspective and the acorn in the corner is a good reference.

James, can you give us a sense of the size of this mushroom?
