Way cool. Looks like sapsucker holes. There has been fascinating discussions surrounding the symbiotic partnerships between woodpeckers and fungi – but it is hard for me to imagine the sapsucker benefiting here? Is the tree dead? Maybe the tree dying and then the sap stopping just made a great entry point for the fungi.

I found it peculiar how fungus occupied holes made by someone else. Woodpecker?
