Observation 372555: Phallus rubicundus (Bosc) Fr.
When: 2019-07-05
Collection location: Midland, Michigan, USA [Click for map]
Who: Eric (eozkan)
No specimen available
Notes:
Was surprised to see this solitary glowing stinkhorn greeting me from a mulched flower bed early this morning. Appears to be Mutinus caninus but perhaps Mutinus elegans…not the usual stinkhorns I’m familiar with. Typical smell with numerous insects already at work on the gleba. Collected an “egg” from the base of the erupted specimen and sectioned that for inspection. Egg was smaller than expected and based on the undifferentiated interior seemed to be at an early stage of development, not ready to erupt any time soon.
