I found this on a tree in Madera Canyon it was really high up on a tree and I cannot remember what kind of tree it was because this was in my beginning years of studying Mushrooms so I had very little knowledge of mushrooms and trees. This Mushroom was about 30 feet high up on a tree. When I looked up from the floor it looked like fomes fomentarius because of the hoof shape. I proceeded to throw a rock at it to knock it down. To my surprise it came off very easily. Upon closer examination I’ve noticed that the pores on this one juUpon closer examination I’ve noticed that the pores on the conk were huge biggest I have ever seen to this day. Approx 2-3mm diameter! It was a type of conk that I have not been able to identify to this day. No expert has been able to identify accurately. Noah Siegel suggested it could be a Inonotus arizonicus. However all of the pictures I have seen don’t match this specimen.
I have gone back to Madera to try and remember what kind of trade this was on but it’s been so long the forest looks so different to me now. I will send this to get it sequenced sometime this year hopefully it’s a new species.
