Observation 399728: Hypoxylon Bull.

When: 2020-01-13

Collection location: Susquehanna Riverlands, Salem Twp., Luzerne Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

No specimen available

Notes:
On a large fallen beech trunk.
Scraped some material off the surface, mounted in Congo red, and scoped at 400×. Black half-moon shaped objects match the description of H. fragiforme spores. Wondering about the thin/elongate fusiform objects (seen in second micro). I saw quite a few of them. What are these?
According to a few things I read about Hypoxylon, I should probably mount material in KOH and look for specific color change.
