Observation 45151: Gyromitra esculenta (Pers.) Fr.

When: 2010-05-03

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

These very large ones were found in Zone 18. There were quite a few scattered around.

The one in Zone 49 has been destroyed by slugs or something eating it, leaving only the stem and a gooey mess. The ones in Zone 12 have been destroyed by something else. The #&@! that have been logging in the woods had not expanded the damaged areas for a while, but sometime in the last week that changed and Zones 12 and 13 are the casualties. As near as I can tell, in fact, Zones 01 through 06, 14, and 15 are the only intact ones on the north side except possibly the zones down by the river in the west. The south side and the far side of the highway: still intact thus far aside from some minor damage in Zone 40 which is basically adjacent to Zone 12.
