No Hemlocks

There are no hemlocks at Strouds Run. This mushroom was growing under a large plantation pine in an area being overtaken by natural hardwood forest. There were some small maple saplings nearby, but I suspect this Amanita is associated with the pine.

Are you sure there weren’t hemlocks in the immediate area?

My suggestion is an amanita of section Amanita.

Despite the annulus’ being very weakly structured and probably absent in mature material, it appears to be submembranous and not slimy as in Limacella. The margin looks striate. It seems similar to Yves Lamoureux’s provisional Amanita praecox.

Often fruits in June and then again in the fall. Don’t know what to call it.

Viscid cap

It was raining when i found this mushroom, so I did not think much of the viscid looking cap, I thought it was just wet. However, the cap became sticky while drying. I had to peel it off the net bag it was hanging in.

Herbarium specimen available.

You can see where the universal veil is clinging to the stem above the basal bulb. I don’t think I’ve seen that before.

With that viscid cap, and an indistinct volva.
