Observation 469769: Amanita subg. Amanita

When: 2021-09-14

Collection location: Midland, Michigan, USA [Click for map]

Who: Eric (eozkan)

No specimen available

Collected this unusual Amanita from sandy soil beneath a large Pin Oak tree adjacent to a parking lot. Thick stem, bronze-colored cap, sac-like volva. Similar and same location to mushroom in OBS 469053, like a thick-bodied, robust Grisette. Would appreciate help with identification.

Proposed Names

-18% (2)
Recognized by sight: It appears there is annular zone on this specimen.
28% (1)
Recognized by sight: Not sect. Amanita due to absence of a bulb and presence of a saccate volva. Possibly sect. Caesarea, like something near A. spreta. I am bit puzzled by lack of marginal striations that should be present in sections Caesarea and Vaginatae.

If you look closely at obs 469053 (same species) it indeed has short marginal striations. This must be sect. caesarea.
