Found on a east facing slope in a mixed hardwood forest primarily consisting of beech, shagbark hickory, paw paw, ash, buckeye and red oak. Other species found in the area include Morchella and Flammulina Velutipes. Located near a stream and only slightly above the floodplain. 3 individuals from two fruitings days apart, apparently growing from detritus or soil, not from any apparent wood pieces, and sheltered by ferns. Strong bluing occurred within 30 seconds on the bulb on the base as well as where damaged.
