Observation 47960: Coltricia montagnei (Fr.) Murrill

When: 2010-07-02

Collection location: Hong Kong, China [Click for map]

Who: Timmy (TuesdayHiker)

No specimen available

The fungi would be the young stage form of Onnia tomentosa. With a velvet top and a stem but never multiple caps on one stem (compare with Phaeolus schweinitzii). Both cap and stem sometimes merge with the adjacent ones. From pic #1, the alignment shows very likely the fungi are grown from the same branch of a buried tree root.

Woolly velvet top

Recognized by sight: I returned to the location today and found they should be Coltricia cinnamomea. Also I found no conifers or spruce even in the nearby area.

Nice to see some fungi from another part of the world. There should be more postings from that part of the world here. But it would be nice to see higher resolution photos, I can’t see much in these low-res photos.
