Most known Rhizopogon species are related to Suillus and Boletus mushrooms, so have the same caveats as eating those species: be cautious about any brilliant red- or blue-staining Rhizopogons. Rhizopogon and Gymnomyces can both be associated with Pinus. Was this found in a pine plantation? Do you know what kind of pine?

Thanks for the info. I found it in grass, near pine trees. I have put up another observation (#48809) of what may be the same type, but older? Also, my friend insists these are great to eat… Is this true of Rhizopogon sp.?

Do you remember any nearby/close trees or shrubs? Rhizopogon is characterized by having abundant rhizimes (thread-like rhizomorphs) over the sporocarp, and generally not have a sterile base. To my eye, this appears to have a rudimentary sterile base as shown in the first photo, although the sporocarp looks upside-down. If I had to guess, I’d lean towards Gymnomyces, but that’s a complete guess as well. I apologize for my lack of knowledge of Australian astrogastrous fungi, but the last I heard Dr. Trappe and some cohorts spent 3 weeks collecting in Oz and found something like 350 new species, genii and genera there. Many collected from the northwestern coast of Australia were actually found up to 50 meters UP the tree, possibly an adaptation to the extreme rainfall there.
