When: 2007-11-13

Collection location: Nags Head, North Carolina, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

No specimen available

puffball in leaf litter next to rotting hardwood log
ST: 30×15-20mm, much white fuzz around base
CAP: 30mm wide, creamy to sl tannish, min finely soft warty, solid color, sl umbo, skin ~0.5mm thick
FLESH: white, v soft and spongy, stains bright yellow esp at base and just under spore mass
SPORE: soft, spongy, olive-drab

I’m not even sure why I bother — without any literature (or even a microscope at the moment!), IDing puffballs is an excersize in pure frustration.

The other M. pyriforme I’ve seen didn’t stain yellow like this one, but I don’t know if that’s significant. I’m moving it to Morganella because it grw on wood.
