Just TLCed a couple hundred specimens of Lecidea

My head is still reeling, trying to make sense of the results. Starting with the ones which are close, just simple misidentifications. Quite a few from my earlier collections, not surprisingly.

There was one location in eastern Washington that was just covered with L. fuscoatra and L. cascadensis. I collected a dozen or so specimens from that one spot. You wouldn’t believe the chemical variation in that population. Has Bruce McCune and me stumped. But what are you going to do? Make notes and move on, I guess…

(It’s worth noting that L. fuscoatra can also contain schizopeltic as an accessory, but I happen to have this particular specimen — one I’ve kept for reference — and sure enough, the hypothecium is not brown under young apothecia, so this is a clear id.)

I’ve learned that you need to check relatively young apothecia, because in the L. fuscoatra and L. atrobrunnea groups very old apothecia will start to develop dark pigment at the top of the hypothecium.
