Observation 52266: Amanita velatipes G.F. Atk.

When: 2010-09-07

Collection location: Columbia Co., Pennsylvania, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dave W (Dave W)

Specimen available

I think this may be velatipes, but the shaggy stalk and concentric splitting of the basal bulb seem more like amerimuscaria. We’ve had very hot dry weather for two solid weeks following a 2-4 inch soaker. The weird conditions produce fungal anomalies. This button is about 1.5 inches diameter (thickness). Mixed hardwoods… beech, birch, some oak.

This material has been accessioned into Rod’s herbarium.

I think you have a good proposal for this ID.
