the Xanthoconiums family, as other boletes work well with ammonia, and if you can get it KOH. But even if you just use some ammonia on parts of the cap, pores, flesh, stipe… you will see some great indicators. This one in particular stains blue green on the cap with ammonia.

I had no idea about the variability in X. separans both in the stipe and the stem and would never been able to identify this through my standard references. Thanks very much. Mark
