Observation 53465: Clitocybe (Fr.) Staude

When: 2010-09-20

Collection location: Great American Highway, San Francisco, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Adam Singer (adam)

No specimen available

Found in dirt under Cypress pine, about a few blocks from the ocean in the Sunset. Tried to get a spore print but no spores dropped. Guessing it had white spores I keyed it out to Hygrophorus in Mushrooms Demystified but nothing there really matches so posting as “Fungi sp.”

Color is flesh colored but not pin, more peach/white. Cap and stipe have same color, cap is fleshy, fairly firm, and stipe is thick and solid.

Edit 9/22/10: Confirmed last night at the MSSF meeting that this is indeed an older Clitocybe. Also it was pointed out to me that the smell was/is classically that of a clitocybe and indeed it has quite a unique smell. I wouldn’t call it sweet as one person did but it’s certainly not that generic “mushroomy smell” and is quite distinctive.
