I named this species in 1985 to honor Alex Smith, who brought it to wide attention under an incorrect name (A. perrarus). At that time records of earlier names were kept on a card file (at Beltsville, MD) and the earlier obscure name created by Koltzsch for what was later called Lactarius minimus was missed. Even with today’s databases the actual citation for Koltzsch’s name is unknown, but it clearly precedes mine… so I’ll probably need to ‘upgrade’ A. smithii to something unique. This is a common problem in Agaricus, as for many years most mushrooms were placed in Agaricus in a very broad sense.
