devil’s coach horse beetle

Super photo, Dan. I think I recognize the beetle. It might be Staphylinus olens (= Ocypus olens), a staphylinid beetle introduced to the Americas from Europe. It is a predator and carrion eater, so likely wouldn’t bother the mushroom. It is large and dramatic, so there is a bit of folklore attached to it in Europe. There is a Wikipedia article about it under the title Devil’s coach horse beetle.
