Observation 55951: Lyophyllum semitale (Fr.) Kühner

When: 2010-09-20

Collection location: Theater Area, Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: walt sturgeon (Mycowalt)

No specimen available

This one has me stumped. It does not look like postings of this species on MO.
It does match Kuo’s description at mushroomexpert.com and fits the photo at Mycoquebec.org.

I do not have the collection as I was traveling. I think you are correct. It matches this photo quite well. http://www.mycoquebec.org/... semitale/ Lyophylle des sentiers&tag=Lyophyllum semitale&gro=26

If you still have them, how do they look now?
I was thinking of Lyophyllum semitale, with a strong farinaceous (a bit rancid) smell/taste. It should be blackening (but it’s a rather slow process).

Melanoleuca cognata has crowded lamellae, not such a dark pileus, and a very characteristic smell.
This looks much more like a Lyophyllum. Are the fruitbodies firm – try tapping them.

could at least confirm or rule out Entoloma..

The Entoloma/Lyophyllum/Lepista problem rears it’s ugly head again.

tells me that this is no Melanoleuca. Rather Entoloma, or Lyophyllum, or maybe Lepista.
