I guess my nose doesn’t interpret this fragrance the same as most other people. It has a strong scent but, to me, smells like play doh with an overlay of maraschino cherries. I find no hint of anise. Rather numerous among madrone and some non-native oak.
I’m downgrading this because, after looking through Arora’s book, I can see that there are several Clitocybes with a sweet odor, which is a much better description of the odor of these mushrooms than “anise-like”. Unfortunately, I can’t find a good match for the species and was unable to get a spore print.
