The tap roots are a little short but these were growing in fairly hard, rocky ground, also making it difficult to cleanly extract the entire mushroom.

Recognized by sight: The species may be in doubt, but they were clearly Phaeocollybia. I usually don’t post specimens that are not complete but these did have long roots that got broken off during extraction from the ground.

Too robust…

We found a Phaeocollybia californica in Albion this year (2010). Much thinner stipe, less robust overall. Compare to photos!

Genetic data on our specimen hopefully forthcoming…
