When: 2007-12-26
Collection location: Buttonwood, south Key Largo, Monroe Co., Florida, USA [Click for map]
Notes:
small earthstar in leaf litter, occasionally on twigs or on surface of rotten limbs, whitish conspicuous mycelial mat surrounding it and binding leaves and twigs together
CAP: ~25mm wide when open, inner spore case ~10-12mm wide, outer skin orangish brown and roughened, inner surface pale buff and cracked, peridium ~1.5mm wide, inner spore case pale to light brown and completely uniform and min dusty/roughened, terminal pore puckered and rupturing through very small hole
SPORE: mass cottony light to medium brown
I’d reported this as wood-dwelling earlier, but in fact that was an unusual specimen. I’ve seen maybe a dozen since then, all in leaves.
