When: 2008-01-09

Collection location: Howarth Park, Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Debbie Drechsler (debdrex)

No specimen available

Fruiting with Douglas fir, bay and deciduous oak. Pileus bruises dark pink. It had a faint odor that might have been almond. Faintly sweet, with a bit of tang to it. A fine wine…oops, I mean mushroom.

Pileus shouldn’t bruise

For this to be A. subrutilescens only the gills should stain and they should become darker pink. It also shouldn’t have an almondy odor and the cap should be darker (wine colored). That said, it does look like a pale A. subrutilescens. This might actually be something like Agaricus arorae. I’d have to have more precise info on the staining reactions and the odor to know for sure. Without that info, I’d call it Agaricus sp.
