I thought this was some type of large Lactarius, but thee was no milk whatsoever when cut (see photo). Grew at the edge of oak/brush.

I added a blow-up part of gills from the first posted picture. I think there is some forking, but not a lot.

Did the gills fork?

Perhaps Paxillus? The gills will fork often.
