Observation 610: Scleroderma laeve Lloyd

When: 2006-08-06

Collection location: Burbank, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)

Specimen available

Notes:
Initially identifed based on macroscopic descriptions in Mushrooms Demystified. All specimens have scales, but they don’t appear to be inherent as described. The peridium stains pinkish at first but ultimately turns vinaceous.

Looking at the spores they are definitely spiny not reticulate. The spore sizes I measured from one specimen were 12-15 microns. Based on the descriptions in Mushrooms Demystified this makes S. laeve the best match. However, at the same time I looked at the spores for one of the collections from DreamWorks and while they are in the roughly the same size range, the DreamWorks one had fewer, thinner, longer spines than the one from Burbank. However, it is worth noting that DreamWorks specimen had been dried and frozen, whereas the Burbank one was still fresh.
