Observation 6300: Cordyceps militaris (L.) Fr.

When: 2006-07-15

Collection location: Cabin Cove, Haywood Co., North Carolina, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

No specimen available

Notes:
Another neat fungus that is inexcusably underrepresented on this fine website. According to David Attenborough in the Planet Earth series :) Cordyceps are specific to a single insect species for their hosts in the tropics. Given the abundance of these throughout the summer in the Smokies, I somehow doubt that this particular Cordyceps is so finicky.
