Observation 63713: Cordyceps ravenelii Berk. & M.A. Curtis

Living on larvae of – most probably – June Beetle (Polyphylla decimlineata) that in turn, lives on root of introduced Beach Grass (Ammophila arenaria & A. breviligulata, both are present on this site). Identified as Cordyceps ravenelii of eastern North America, although the size of spores does not fit too well. Also known from the San Juan Islands, US and several other sites in the Tofino, BC area.

Seen again on May 17, 2016:

Hi Nick,

Hope all is well and you have been going on some interesting mothing adventures! We sure have, including some other “discoveries”…

Cordyceps ravenelii : A rare fungus found May 17, 2016 parasitising out of the eye sockets of the Ten-lined June Beetle at Schooner Cove dunes, west end near May 2014 planting area (DSC 1300-1303). Claudia also found the fungus/beetle again but this time at the Wickaninnish main dunes during a UXO/Ammophila survey on May 20, 2016 (IMGP1307)!

Here is the information found on Cordyceps ravenelii in Status Report on Coastal Sandy Ecosystems in BC (Page et al., 2011):

“Cordyceps ravenelii : a rare fungus that parasitizes the larvae of the Ten-lined June Beetle (Polyphylla decemlineata) pupating underground amongst dune grasses; first BC record was from Vargas Island dunes in 2001 (N. Page pers. obs.); also recorded in dunes at Schooner Cove and on San Juan Island (A. Ceska, pers. comm.); searched for but not found in the Wickaninnish dunes (Roberts et al., 2004). The taxonomy of this species is still under review.” [Page, N., P. Lilley, I.J. Walker and R.G. Vennesland. 2011. Status report on coastal sand ecosystems in British
Columbia. Report prepared for the Coastal Sand Ecosystems Recovery Team. vii + 83 p. http://www.raincoastappliedecology.ca/... ]
