Observation 63852: Cantharellus californicus Arora & Dunham

When: 2011-02-11

Collection location: Oakland Hills, Oakland, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Debbie Viess (amanitarita)

Specimen available

These were a part of only a handful of chanterelles in an area untouched by other hunters (there were also a couple of medium sized ones that were broken and/or rotting), in a normally very prolific area we have dubbed Chanterelle City. On this undisclosed hillside (did I just see Dick Cheney??!), it has been a very unproductive chanterelle season. The largest of the chanterelles that we found were merely medium sized for the species, and there weren’t many of ’em.

Harvest-sized chanterelle. (Knife is 6 inches. )
below legal size limit; left to grow.

I was fishing in Wyoming, not chanterelle hunting. Same story in SC county. Definetly not like last year.
