Observation 65277: Trentepohlia Mart.

When: 2011-04-05

Collection location: Briarcrest Neighborhood, Shoreline, Washington, USA [Click for map]

Who: Tim Sage (NMNR)

No specimen available

I am not even positive this is a lichen, but I do remember it having been on this tree for years. I failed to observe the species of hardwood. It also is more red in real life than it is on my monitor.

This is an alga named Trentepohlia. The green of its chlorophyll is masked by the orange red of its beta-carotene. Here is a photo from a previous Botany Photo of the Day and an MO Observation from Point Lobos, CA.
