which usually is more up to date, also lists Capitotricha rubi as a synonym, but it’s not consistent with Capitotricha bicolor, which they use as the current name for the other variety. The sites I have seen, that are dealing exclusively with ascomycetes, have them both in Capitotricha as different species now.

I don’t have a good answer to your question. The way I see it, a “valid synonym” is a name that is correctly identified as a synonym. It becomes deprecated when someone decides to make it deprecated. It should be done when there’s consensus about using another name, and that’s not always the case..

IF lists Lachnum bicolor var. rubi as the current name for Capitotricha rubi. Is there a difference between a valid and deprecated synonym?
