Just glanced through the new morchella taxonomy.

Looks like the key feature for this species is that the cap attachment is slightly recessed, what Kuo et al call “attached with a sinus.”

These do look somewhat like the “blondes morels” of burn sites (which I have collected). But as is explained in the new NA morchella taxonomy, the burn site blondes are dramatically faded versions of M. tomentosa. Both M. frustrata and M. tomentosa are placed in the elata clade.

Now why would anybody

wanna “as if” calling a morel “good tasting?”

That’s interesting, Noah. These look a lot like the “Fire Blondes” I picked in Idaho a few years back. I suspect they are likely a similar (if not the same) species, with the Fire version fruiting in larger numbers. Did you find them in Lodgepole Pine? To my eye, the Blondes looked more like an esculenta, with deep pits that occasionally turned corners. But maybe my interpretation had at least something to do with the Blondes being obviously different from the “Conica”, which I thought were clearly similar to pictures I have seen of other Western NA “blacks.”

They are whats called “Natural Blonds” here, but it’s really a yellow “black morel”; it shows similarities with other black morels (other than color)and clades out well within them as well.
