Observation 69663: Amanita phalloides (Vaill. ex Fr.) Link

When: 2011-06-16

Collection location: City Hall, Folsom, California, USA [Click for map]

Who: Money Man (Money Man)

No specimen available

No gills on this one, this is a spore mushroom. I found this one last year for my friend Steve Rogers (at least I think it is the same mushroom) and he told me that this was a poisonous one. He probably has it on his observer page. This one is found right in front of Folsom City Hall, in the grass, under trees. Some of the trees are pine in the immediate vicinity, if I recall correctly.
Notice the mottled coloration on the top of the cap, almost green tint.

Great advice. I am excited to read your comments. Debbie, you had me crack up with your comment about breaking the bill to buy a guide.

I think you all will be happy to know that my eldest son bought me a Peterson’s Guide on Father’s Day. It is soooooo hard to figure out these mushrooms. I have only been doing this for 2 months, I am absolutely learning a ton and enjoying it.

Myxomop, with the red suspenders, great tip on photos, I’ll do my best but I am not a photographer, just an inspiring amateur mycologist. I will now dig up my bases. Peterson’s talks about the bases being important for I.D. also. I didn’t know that before.

Britney, everyone has been more than friendly. Thanks for the support.

I think you all will be happy also to know that I have 7 children and 3 are already learning about mushrooms because of the pictures I am posting on this website.

but not on of us cares about your $$. You obviously have a natural curiosity
about fungi so develop that, people have already provided you with several good links and ideas and books. Take some time on this forum and look at what makes a good photo for identification or for art.

are really a partial veil covering the gills. you left the volva in the ground.

break that $100 and buy a field guide!!! It will help you immensely.

big money

take a gander here:

so that you may be rich in both paper and observation comprehensiveness.

also worth noting that all mushroom anatomy is created equal. be sure to dig up your bases with the rest of the fruiting body, as they can contain features which are crucial for sound identification.
