Recognized by sight: This Russula was striking because of its bruised red base at the bottom of the stipe. It had an orange/brown cap. Gills were spotted rust colored, and eventually stained brown after some bruising.
The stipe was cream near the top, the yellowing, and definite red at the base.

Based on chemical features: KOH on cap red. Flesh negative. Stipe yellow/red.
