But the base is stocky, with no right-angled crook, the yellowing is rather pale, the base of the stipe has scaly rings around it, and the cap flesh is very thick, not to mention the pink gills even when very young.

Probably something in Section Arvenses (smell it for an almond odor, although some people cannot distinguish this at all and others detect as being very similar to the phenol odor).

It actually looks remarkably like what people used to call A. osecanus on the CA coast…
