Observation 70538: Boletus variipes Peck

When: 2011-06-29

Collection location: Washington Crossing State Park, Mercer Co., New Jersey, USA [Click for map]

Who: I. G. Safonov (IGSafonov)

No specimen available

Notes:
Two gargantuan specimens growing on exposed soil (no grass around!) near the base of an ash tree, with old oaks, maples and other hardwoods in the vicinity. The larger basidiocarp measures 21 cm (~8.3 in) in diameter; the smaller and more round one is 16 cm (6.3 inches) in diameter. The pale brown stipe with brownish reticulation is very thick and short relative to the size of the pileus. The context is white, with a faint and pleasant odor. Could be B. variipes.
