the assumption was that the shelf is the Coenogonium, but that idea was more a product of sleep deprivation than rational thinking.

Isn’t Coenogonium a crust? This is a maze gill with a very velvety green surface. Are you suggesting that Coenogonium is growing on the shelf fungus? That’s def’ not whats happening here.
