We are depositing our specimen into the UBC herbarium and we would like to have the same name on the herbarium label as on the corresponding MO observation. In the UBC herbarium, there are 8 specimens of Panellus serotinus and one (absurdly it is our specimen) as Sarcomyxa serotina. If you check the MyCoPortal, 240 specimens are labeled as P. serotinus and 48 as S. serotina. About the same ratio (385/56) is the number of hits if you search Google Scholar. BTW, I found only one specimen of Agaricus serotinus collected around 1880 and deposited in a Florida herbarium. They all refer to the same species of mushrooms.

Mushrooms stay the same, the names vacillate.

Sarcomyxa serotina (Pers.) P. Karst. and Panellus serotinus (Pers.) Kühner are indeed synonyms, but neither of them is outdated. They are used interchangeably according to one’s generic concept. The outdated name for this taxon is Agaricus serotinus Pers., the name on which the other names are based.
