whether it’s T. badiceps or ferrugineus is an open question but it is one or the other.

Why are the stipes purple? Is this an optical illusion created by the camera or is it real? From these pics these look more like T. plumbeoviolaceus!

I find badiceps to be mostly brown and has a distinct smell, while I find ferrugineus to be redder and without any particular smell. Also I don’t know what the so-called beveled margin means since literally dozens of boletes can have a beveled margin at some point in their development as the cap expands and the hymenaphore bevels out. If this phrase that everyone repeats means that there is a sharp straight angle between the cap margin and the flat part of the pore surface then I don’t see that. I assume this (beveled) means a straight angle rather than an arch or a curve between the margin and the hymenaphore. Badiceps is a Peck species but he didn’t see it until McIllvane sent him the holotype which he described as having a brown stipe. Singers description of ferrugineus describes a reddish brown stipe concolorous with the cap and if you look at the paiting of ferrugineus in Dick and Snell they depict a distinctly reddish mushroom. Compare that with the photos in Bessette which shows a brown cap and stipe (to my eyes anyway). Having said all that i’ll freely admit that it’s never clear how to split these two in the field, two oak loving sweet tasting, reddish brown Tylopilus and everywhere I go people have a slightly different take on which is which without chemical tests which i don’t trust all that much.
